Recently revamped sports program for kids offers bountiful benefits
The Y offers year-round sports for kids of all ages and skill levels. Everyone is welcome to participate, practice and play.
About the program
Depending on the time of year and Y location, kids can choose from sports like baseball, basketball, cheerleading, tumbling, dodgeball, flag football, floor hockey, lacrosse, martial arts, soccer, track and field, running club and volleyball.
Based on your family’s schedule and your child’s interests, kids can participate in a variety of sports formats, including:
- Classes—are held once a week, teach the fundamentals of each sport and give kids a chance to apply these skills during in-class scrimmages
- Leagues—help kids take skills to the next level with a day of practice each week, and experience positive competition in weekly officiated games
- Clinics—let kids explore a new sport with free, drop-in clinics held throughout the year
- Private and group training—from one-on-one sessions to small groups and larger team settings, our trainers customize each session to meet the goals of the individual or group
The Y sports difference
Studies show that kids who participate in sports are more likely to succeed in school and develop important social-emotional skills like goal-setting, self-esteem and leadership.
The Y’s sports program focuses on giving everyone, regardless of skill level, a safe place to play, grow and thrive. District Executive Mike Lavin says that sports at the Y build on the YMCA areas of focus:
- Youth development—kids build character and transform into leaders that are confident and care for their opponents
- Healthy living—kids are active, build athletic skills and have fun in sports
- Social responsibility—kids are able to build positive relationships with adult volunteers, and the Y offers financial assistance so that all kids are welcome to participate

How to get involved
Registration is open for Session 3 sports, which run June 20 through August 20. Adults and teens can volunteer as a coach or assistant—ask your local Y for details.
