Democracy in Good Hands
When public dialogue can feel loud and polarized, young Minnesotans are showing us how to listen, engage with respect and lead together.
Our political landscape can often feel divided, loud, and exhausting. But step into a room with the young people of the YMCA Center for Youth Voice, and the tone changes.
Here, youth from every background and perspective are coming together—not to shout over each other, but to listen and share ideas. In programs like Youth in Government, these capable young leaders are tackling tough issues, debating policy, and practicing the art of respectful disagreement.
They aren’t waiting to inherit a better civic culture—they’re building one right now.
“What we learn is not just politics…it’s how do you problem solve? Knowing who to talk to…I’ve also learned to talk on my feet. I never did that before Youth in Government. I never had an open, safe space to do that.”
- Esha V., Youth Governor
Beyond the Capitol: The Center for Youth Voice
Youth in Government is a flagship example of how young people experience state policy firsthand. But it is part of a much larger mission at the YMCA Center for Youth Voice. CYV is dedicated to preserving Minnesota’s strong civic culture by helping young people understand our systems of government and use their voices to take meaningful action on issues that matter to them. Whether students are casting their first ballot on Election Day, serving as election judges, hosting classroom dialogues, or debating global policy, the Y provides hands-on, non-partisan experiences where young people don’t just learn about government, they become a part of it.
Building the Skills Our Communities Need Most
Civic engagement isn’t just good for youth—it strengthens entire communities. Through the Center for Youth Voice, young people practice critical thinking, empathetic listening, constructive problem-solving, and collaboration across differences. When we equip them with the skills and confidence to navigate tough issues respectfully, we cultivate leaders who have both the drive and the tools to build a better future for everyone.
“Young people in civics is so important because we are the future of this country”
– Sophie, National Civics Bee Minnesota State Final participant
