Family Camp Guide

Community Standards

  • Be Kind – We ask that when interacting with staff and other campers alike, we always use the lens of kindness. 

  • Be Respectful – Treat staff, others, yourself, and the environment respectfully. 

  • Be Safe – Follow our guidelines to not only have a fun session at camp but also a safe time. 

Bullying

At YMCA of the North, bullying is inexcusable, and we have a firm policy against bullying. Each participant is expected to treat all other participants respectfully and help each other achieve the best possible experience.

Parents and guardians may be called upon if a participant has difficulty meeting this expectation.

Our leadership addresses all incidents of bullying seriously. Our staff is trained to uphold our core values and follow proper communication channels to report and respond to bullying. Our team works with their groups to ensure all participants receive safe and equitable programming opportunities.

Participant Requirements

Family Camp LDP

Participants must meet the following criteria to participate in the Family Camp Leadership Development Program:

  • Entering grade 9 the summer after senior year of high school, I was willing to serve the needs of the camp and family campers for two weeks. 

  • Be committed to working on personal, interpersonal, and leadership skills. 

  • Be open to new outdoor experiences (e.g., canoeing, fire starting, camping, etc.). 

  • Be excited to assist staff with scheduled family activities and age groups. 

  • Be willing to assist in the daily activities around camp (e.g., dishes, cabin cleaning, work projects, etc.).

  • Be prepared to live in a community with peers, using shared sleeping quarters and bathrooms, and have the ability to address conflict respectfully and appropriately.

Unacceptable Behavior

  • Refusing to follow the behavior guidelines or adventure center rules. 

  • Using profanity, vulgarity, or obscenity. 

  • Stealing or damaging property (personal or YMCA property).

  • Endangering the health and safety of campers and staff.

  • Physical violence or bullying/teasing toward another participant or staff.

  • Tobacco use inside structures or on Camp property. There are smoking areas nearby at both Camps. 

  • Use of illegal drugs on property.

  • Bringing any guns and any weapons.

Staff Response
  • Staff will redirect the participant to more appropriate behavior. 
  • If inappropriate behavior continues, the participant will be reminded of behavior guidelines and YMCA rules and asked to decide on action steps to correct their behavior. 
  • Staff will document the situation, the inappropriate behavior, and the action taken. Parents will be notified if this takes place during age groups. 
  • If the situation is not resolved and inappropriate behavior continues, the participant will be dismissed from camp as a final action step.
In Case of Removal

Physical violence, bullying toward another participant or staff member, endangering the camp community, and not adhering to unacceptable behaviors above could all result in immediate dismissal from the camp program.

Participant fees are non-refundable if a participant is sent home for behavior or disciplinary reasons.
